Situation: City of Urbandale, a rapidly growing and affluent suburb in the Des Moines metro area, was confronted with an aging swimming pool complex that needed extensive repairs at the same time community leaders identified a need for a community recreation center.

PR Action: Hanser & Associates in 2005 conducted a feasibility study assessing the public’s support for a proposed new community center, including conducting executive interviews and a community-wide survey of 388 residents. Public input, gathered by the firm, showed wide support for a new community center and swimming pool.

Results: The project resulted in approval of the project by the Parks board and City Council, and the initiative was put to a vote for approval in a city election.
