June 30 = Social Media Day

Social Media Day – founded by Mashable – is an annual global event on June 30.  Nine cities and one U.S. state have declared Social Media Day an official holiday!   There were more than 1,400 Meetups with thousands of attendees worldwide in 2011.

Two themes for Saturday, June 30,  2012 (the third annual Social Media Day) celebrate the integration of community-building via social media:

- How social media impacts your local community  http://mashable.com/smday/

- How companies (large and small) are integrating social media into their public relations and marketing programs.

FOR EXAMPLE: DES MOINES…  Few surveys track the adoption and use of social media by businesses based in a single metro area.   One is by Des Moines, Iowa-based Hanser & Associates, a public relations firm that provides social media services to international, national and local companies.

In March 2012 the firm released its third annual survey on social media activity in central Iowa.

Key findings (and trends being tracked) in the 2012 Social Media in Des Moines survey include data on  businesses’ adoption of social media, staff committed, video sharing, measurement, lack of strategy and resources — and much more.  The fuller PDF report is viewable.

You can email Ryan Hanser directly if you’re seeking advice or other direct assistance with your social media program.
